Some developer tidbits about OFP2

All of the following facts about the upcoming OFP2 Dragon Rising was gleaned from dev commentary on a forum I frequent…

  • Mission editor is PC only, and will not be available on consoles.
  • Co-op mode on the 360 will be 4 player. Co-op will also be available on the PS3 and PC.
  • The entire island is rendered all the time and streamed as you traverse it.
  • Each mission restricts the player to a given square ‘zone’ of operations outside of which there is no mission content. These zones are large enough that it’s rare to reach the edge of one unless the player is trying to do so. On the PC version people could probably make missions that encomapass the whole island if they wanted to.
  • There are several large areas that the campaign missions never go.
  • It is estimated if you walked in straight line across the length it would take you about 4-6 hours of real time, though the map is a lot longer than it is wide.
  • There are save check points on the lower difficulty levels.
  • There are objectives at certain points on the map, but you can attack them from whatever direction you feel is best unless the terrain would naturally get in the way.
  • There are no artificial cliff walls making you follow corridors, as in Far Cry 2 for instance.
  • The fog visible in previous videos is pretty much just for atmosphere and to give a better sense of distance, the engine can render the entire island just with the lod system. It varies based on the time of day and the weather conditions setup for the mission.
  • There is no leaning for the players on consoles and it has not yet been decided if this feature will be included for PC although the animations are there as your AI team mates and opposition can lean.
  • It will likely not support Track IR to the same extent as Arma2 in that the game has no support for separate head and hand movement, its traditional FPS style in that respect.
  • The editor uses lua scripting for the more complex things, but you can drag a bunch of soldiers and vehicles into an area on the 2D map and just start playing. Its easy to set general variables like the time of day but more tricky if you want to way point a bunch of trucks to drive in a convoy.
  • Will not support LAN multiplayer (more info here) (EDIT: Now with clarification here)
  • No bunny hopping.

Just to let you all know. This entire article is completely wrong mostly. Most of the things said have not been confirmed by devs. I am a frequent on the main forums for OFP:DR and I know Helios and o ther members of the team.

    <adi> anyone want’s to post a comment?
<adi> that article is mostly incorrect
<adi> to hell with it the whole article is incorrect

  2. You’ve heard what you’ve heard and I’ve heard what I’ve heard, but I stand by the list until I hear otherwise. Beyond that…

    A) There are no incoming links here from the OFP2 forum, but I see you spend a lot of time on IRC. I remember IRC, it’s swell.

    B) The article is in fact, not “completely wrong mostly” but you’re welcome to think otherwise.

    C) It’s just a video game. Relax.

  3. Well I hate to say it but a few of these points are wrong. For instance in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7jdtSszBT4 ,  at about 2:20  you can hear the devs comment in the background that it takes 9.5 hours to cross the island on foot.
And the “clarification” you posted actually says the opposite for LAN multiplayer.

  4. Yeah, that’s why it’s a clarification. It’s clarifying.
As for the size of the island, please reread and take note of the word “estimate”… so your dev source estimates 9.5, mine estimates 4 to 6. Guess what? They are estimates as I’m reasonably sure no one has had the time nor inclination to actually walk across the damned island. When you buy it, please walk across and get back to us. Thanks.

  5. Clarifying what? That the previous sentence was complete bullshit? And just so you know, Codemasters DID get a guy from QA to walk across the whole damned island, and it took 9 and a half hours. I dont know what dev you talked to, but he doesnt develop for Flashpoint.

  6. Read the original multiplayer LAN link above, then read the second link in the edit. If you can’t see how the second clarifies the first then I’m afraid our “intellectual debate” is at an end. Again, I stand by the list above, and will post any clarifications as needed.

  7. Christ and to think they call ArmA fanboys bad :D

  8. This really was quite something, but you know… summer vacation and all. Kids get bored. ;)

datter I enjoy your comments and reviews. I enjoy playing Arma 2 though I could never get into Arma 1 for some reason. I am a little confused though when I bring up the multiplayer listing in Arma 2 to see SO many servers for Arma 2 but SO few players playing. What am I missing here? Am I getting on at the wrong times (I’m in the EST USA time zone).

Flashpoint looks good or should I say better and better. But the word-of-mouth I got was that you would not be able to fly any aircraft/choppers in the game. Is this correct or an error in comment?

  10. You cannot fly planes, as I remember helicopters you can fly however. An odd decision.

  11. Yes, from what I’ve heard it’s just helicopters as well which is fine with me. I mess around with the airplanes in ArmA2 some now and then, but all in all it’s not a flight sim. Helos work out fine, and are essential for transporting troops and such but if I want to fly a jet I’ll break open FSX or Falcon 4.

As for the lots-of-servers-no-players… that might just be the function of a broken game, or at least broken for a lot of people. It’s possible there’s been a lot of servers set up but just not too many people playing these days for all the frame rate/BsoD/CTD problems you’ve likely read about. That or the servers are on 1.02 and the players are on 1.03? I can’t say for certain mind you as I’ve not done a  lot of MP so far outside of co-op with a friend of mine (meeper actually, who supposedly posts on this blog as well). Been meaning to sort through the server lists and find a good one I can attach myself to, but haven’t gotten around to it yet for whatever reason.

Thanks for the comments, glad you’re liking the site.
