PCArmA2 : Key helicopter set up

Flying in ArmA2 is damned good if you’ve got yourself set up correctly. If not it’s a pain in the butt, here’s how to do it right. First of all, you do not fly a real helicopter with a mouse and keyboard for a reason. Use a joystick. Secondly, proper control configuration is vital. Go into Options>Controls>Air Controls and set them up as follows:
- Throttle up (throttle forward)
- Throttle down (throttle back)
- Nose down (joystick forward)
- Nose up (joystick backward)
- Bank left (joystick left)
- Bank right (joystick right)
- Turn left and left pedal (rudder left)
- Turn right and right pedal (rudder right)
Pay special attention to the bank and turn set up for left/right joystick and rudder (twisty stick or pedals). The rudder controls are doubled up on two actions on purpose, and even though it will show up in red (as a conflict) it’s important to leave them that way. After that, set up the views on your joystick hat (up/up, left/left etc). Once in the helicopter double tap the alt key to give you free look (smooth view with the hat control) and try flying. Note how you can move left/right as expected and also have nice rudder authority when set up like this. Also note that most helicopters lose a lot of this rudder authority over 150 knots so keep the speed under that if you expect to be maneuvering a lot.
Set up like this I can fly pirouettes around a pine tree, and have.

Good advice, certainly for the newbies. I have to ask though, where did you get the Kiowa from?
I know, the OFP Kiowa, was ported to ArmA by Southy, but I didn’t think it’d been released.
If you could point us in the right direction, I’d be obliged.

I’m in the same boat as you. I nabbed that pic from a random screenshot on the innerwebs and have no clue where the Kiowa came from. :(

Well that sucks, I’ll have to try porting it myself I suppose.

If you do, let me know and we’ll post about it.

There is no reason to double bind the turn and pedal commands. The “turn” commands are just an arcade style combination of pedal only at low speeds and bank at higher speeds, and having them bound together like that limits the range of control.

As said on the forums, that’s not been my experience at all and double binding those commands has proven essential to getting a decently flyable helo.

The OH58 Kiowa, for ArmA 2. Courtesy of BIS (orignial model) and Southy (porting it). Link

Thanks
That’s a great help.
I was wandering, I’m using Extreme 3D stick, the stick do spring back but in game the heli don’t.
so without proper HUD I can’t define if i’m hovering or moving only by the speed interface.
is there a way to make your heli stop and become horiziontly when the stick is centered (like in some other fly-sims)

It seems you have written the throttles the wrong way around. In a helicopter you pull the throttle towards you to increase power and push it forward to decrease. Obviously oppositie for planes..

I’m disappointed with ARMA II helicopter flight controls. Using the rudder causes the helicopter to bank sharply. :(

Oh wait, never mind. It was only because i followed the instructions in this guide to bind turn and rudder to the same control.
